FAQ

Cane Furniture

Furniture in which a mesh of split canes is stretched over parts of the framework, principally on the backs and seats of chairs. It was made in India as early as the 2nd century AD and was also known in China.

Cane is basically a part of the rattan plant. Unlike rattan, which is most commonly treated and painted, cane is left in its natural round state. In terms of strength, cane is generally stronger than rattan, thus it is most commonly used for binding purposes.

Cane furniture lasts for 10-15 years with a varnish or paint once every three years. Cane sofas are ideal for the sunrooms and as garden furniture.

Made from bamboo sticks or bark of rattan tree, the cane is an extremely lightweight material. You can easily move the furniture without any help.

Although it is not heavy, it is bulky, and shipping costs are based on volumetric weight, so you pay for the volume as well. Furthermore, being handmade, it requires more labor and time to produce by craftsmen.

Cane is a traditional material for garden furniture. To sit on, a cane is warmer and softer than metal, because it does not conduct body heat. Cane is a natural material for use in a natural setting. Many people therefore leave cane furniture outside during the summer and place it undercover during the winter months.

An effective all-purpose cleaning solution for outdoor cane furniture is washing-up liquid and tepid water. Stir vigorously to make a lot of suds. Dip a soft clean cloth in the suds. Gently wipe the furniture without getting it too wet. You may have to use a toothbrush to get in-between the weave. Dry off with a soft cloth.
